William “Bill” Cecil-Smith
Bill passed Wednesday, August 19th, 2026 at 84 years old with friends around him. Born March 9th, 1942 in Toronto, Bill is predeceased by his father Edward “Ed” Cecil-Smith and his mother Lilian Cecil-Smith (née Gouge). It is, was and will continue to be, tough to sum Bill up. Everyone who knew him is still working away at that. Anything we could say about Bill is only, as he would say, “true, but merely true”. In brief Bill was: activist, teacher, organizer. In his own words he was a High-Church atheist and unreconstructed Stalinist.
Bill leaves in his wake a host of friends, comrades, his ex-wife Marilyn and Daughter Genevieve. There was an intensity to Bill which we can’t capture in these few words but if you knew him was memorable.
