Alvin “Barry” Edgar

November 1, 1945 - October 29, 2025

With deep sadness and heavy hearts, we announce that Barry passed away on Wednesday, October 29, 2025 at University Hospital in London, Ontario.  Surrounded by his family, he died peacefully after a shocking diagnosis and subsequent battle with pancreatic and liver cancer.  He was the devoted husband and lifelong partner of Penny for 56 wonderful years. Together they shared a life built on love, laughter, and unshakable devotion.

Barry was a proud and caring father to Ryan and Todd (Carrie), and a loving grandfather to Dale and Kayla, all of whom brought him tremendous pride and joy.

He was predeceased by his parents Alvin (1975) and Mae (2006), and by his brothers Ronald (2015), Reginald (2025) (Barbara 1995), and sister Marilyn Bentley (2025) (Ray 2025). He will be dearly missed by his family including siblings Anita Lemmon (Bob 2022), Jim (Gail), Joan Gerhard (Jim 2009), Bob (Jan), and Lynda Collins (Brad) along with countless nieces, nephews, and friends who were blessed to know his kind and welcoming spirit.

Barry began his working life as a cement finisher alongside his brother Reg and brother-in-law Ray, before joining the Ford Motor Company in 1970.  There, he was not only a proud employee and customer but also a friend and mentor to many until his retirement in 2002. Professionally, he was known for his reliability, strong work ethic, and friendly personality that made everyone feel at ease.

Barry lived life with warmth and generosity. He had an infectious smile and a friendly, welcoming nature that made people instantly comfortable in his company. He was always ready to listen, to lend a helping hand, or to share a laugh over good food. He loved to entertain, and was happiest surrounded by family and friends and showed this by often planning family events.   Bowling was a lifelong passion and he played in leagues for decades.  He also loved to golf whenever he could, and would never turn down a competitive game of cards.

Restoule was his paradise, where he and Penny spent 20 years enjoying the peace and beauty of the place he loved most. Their winters in Fairway Village, Florida, brought sunshine, laughter, and lifelong friendships.  Komoka was where they raised their sons and built the foundation of a life full of love and shared memories.

Barry’s kindness, his unwavering support, and his joyful outlook touched everyone fortunate enough to know him. He will be remembered always for his warm smile, his steady presence, and the love he gave so freely. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, friendship, and devotion that will be cherished forever.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 4th, 2025 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., and on Wednesday, November 5th from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Northview Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 1490 Highbury Avenue North, London. The funeral service will be immediately following the visitation on Wednesday with luncheon to follow.

Dear Penny and family, I’m so very sorry for your loss. Barry’s warmth, humour, and genuine kindness brought such joy through his friendship with my mom, Sharon, and Gerry. His care and support extended beyond them — touching me and my sisters as well. I’ll always remember his thoughtful spirit, like the time he wore one of my Mom’s head coverings on their trip to Florida to help her feel more comfortable, and how beautifully he honoured her life as emcee at her celebration. His sincerity and compassion will be remembered with deep gratitude. Janet Brown (Sharon Drover’s daughter)

Barry wasn’t just a family friend — he was a part of our family. Every summer at the cottage with him is etched in our hearts: the sound of his laughter, the calm way he told stories, the quiet wisdom that seemed to sit in his eyes. He had that rare gift of making everyone feel at home, of turning simple days into cherished memories. For my brothers and me, Barry was like a grandfather we were lucky enough to choose. He taught us how to slow down, how to enjoy the lake breeze, how to find joy in small things — a good meal, a bad joke, a beautiful sunset. Though he’s gone, the lessons and love he gave us live on in every memory, every shared laugh, every summer that reminds us of him. Barry’s kindness, warmth, and steady presence will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. Thank you, Barry, for being part of our lives. We’ll carry your spirit with us — always.

Dear Grandpa, My Mr. Wonderful, To the man I look up to with strength and compassion, to the man who taught me life on a lake.. I’m sorry I didn’t get to say any sort of goodbyes. I’m going to think about it for the rest of my life. But I also figured you wanted nothing to do with me given the circumstances within my home. I’m sorry you fought that cancer so long and so hard, though I have some ease knowing you no longer are suffering that battle. There’s lots I wish I could’ve changed within the past few years, but some things are just simply out of our control. Grandpa you taught me so many things. I thank you for all of it. I thank you for taking me out boating, teaching me to fish with Dad, showing me all the special places that Restoule holds, giving me guidance and support, showing me how you never took anyone’s shit for granted. I thank you for allowing me to do your hair and paint your nails all sorts of colours, though most importantly I thank you for taking me up to the apartment above the garage and teaching me how to sing while we did karaoke. Grandpa something you never knew is that I sing everyday to let out my emotions. I sing everyday to feel better. You taught me that. and I’ll never be able to repay you. I truly hope one day I can make my own music in honour of your life. I also wanted to let you know you got me hooked on fords, I bought my first vehicle, you best bet it’s an F-250, and I’m sorry you weren’t able to see it before you left us. I know you would’ve been so proud. Like always, I can’t think of a time you haven’t been a proud Grandpa. I wish you could be here to ask me again if i’m laughing or crying. Because everytime that came out of your mouth you made me giggle. Your ear to ear smile and random jokes will forever be missed. Thank you for being the type of Grandpa that any little girl would wish for, I’m sorry we didn’t get to spend more time together. Rest easy Grandpa, and never doubt for a second that your precious little Lucy loves and misses you.
