Art (Adrianus Leonardus) Van Luyk

July 7, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Art Van Luyk of London on July 7, 2022 at age 87. He was always surrounded by family and love. Predeceased by his wife and life partner, Leny (nee Grootscholten – 2017) with whom he emigrated from the Netherlands on their honeymoon in 1957.

Art will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by his four daughters – Mya, Diana (Gary) Vestering, Nancy (the late Rick, 2016) Joyal and Wendy; those who fondly called him Opa – Casey (Celine Branget) and Adrian (Tara), Madeleine (Nick) and David (Emily), and Madison; his great grandchildren – Briar, Ava, Everett, Lucas, Emery and baby S; his brothers Nic and Wim, sister Annie, and in-laws in the Netherlands and the Niagara region; plus many more family and friends. Predeceased by his brothers Cor, Ben and Peet and sisters Sjann and Nel.

With a gentle disposition, Art was a family man who taught all that knew him the meaning of hard work, commitment and sharing what you love. He was blessed with doing what he loved most and together with Leny, built Van Luyk Greenhouses, raised a family, travelled and became a respected mentor in his field. His wit and sense of humour had a way of lightening the mood – essential in raising four spirited daughters. Art dabbled in woodworking and was always up for a game of Klaverjas with friends and Dutch Club members – he was the one to beat.

As Art’s dementia progressed, he continued to recognize family most days. We are grateful to the many nurses, PSWs and admin staff who lovingly cared for Art at Earl’s Court Village in London.

With a knowing smile and wink that will be fondly remembered, he has bid us farewell. Forever remembered, forever loved.

Family will be receiving visitors at Northview Funeral Chapel, 1490 Highbury Avenue North, London on Thursday, July 14, 2022 at 11:30 a.m., followed by a service in the chapel at 1:00 p.m. A celebration of life with snacks will follow. A private family interment will take place at a later date. If desired, a donation can be made to the Alzheimer Society Southwest Partners or to a charity of your choice.
