Helena “Helen” Bielik

Helena “Helen” Bielik, age 83, of London, ON, passed away on December 9, 2023, peacefully at home surrounded by family.

Helen was born on February 20, 1940, to parents Jan Rysavy and Etela Rysavy (Capkova) in Horna Krupa, Czechoslovakia.

Helen and her husband and young children fled Czechoslovakia in the year 1969 for a better life where they eventually sought refuge in Ontario, Canada. While in Canada, Helen continued to work as a nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She loved her career as an Operating Room nurse. Helen maintained relationships with many of her former colleagues, she loved getting together with “the girls from the OR” every so often to catch up.

Helen loved to travel. She was always planning a trip somewhere, whether it be to Europe, Cuba, or even as far as Southeast Asia. Much like travelling, Helen loved a good party. She was often attending parties with friends or throwing her own. Helen could be described by friends and family as the life of the party. She loved being with her friends, she cherished the many special relationships she has made throughout her life.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Matus Bielik; daughter Ivica Bielik; brother Milan Bielik; and sister Anicka Stubna (Rysavy).

Helen is survived by her son Ivan Bielik; daughter and son-in-law Adriana Hurst (Bielik) and Michael Hurst; grandchildren Mikayla Steven (Hurst) and husband Mitchell Steven, Mathew Hurst and partner Patricia Gibson. Helen is also survived by her niece Alena Kucirek and her husband Ivo Kucirek and their three children Peter, Daniel, and Nicole Kucirek. Helen has many other cousins, nieces, and nephews in Slovakia whom she loved dearly.

A special thank you to London Health Sciences Palliative care team and the Palliative Care Outreach Team (PCOT 2) for their grace, care, and aiding in Helen’s wish to palliate at home.

There will be a service held at Northview Funeral Chapel, 1490 Highbury Avenue North, London, on December 12, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. with visitation one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to be made to Canadian Cancer Society, in Helen’s honour to fund further cancer research as cancer has greatly impacted her and her loved ones.
