Richard Dirk TerVrugt

May 14, 2022

Suddenly at Henley Place on Saturday, May 14th in his 81st year. Beloved husband of Willemina for almost 55 years. Loving father of Raquelle (Jeff), Julie (Kevin) and predeceased by his son, Richard (Amy). Devoted Opa of Caitlin, Bethany, Benjamin, Nicholas and Emily.  He will be sadly missed by brothers Jan (Map) of the Netherlands, Marck (Amber) and Marjolein (Bart) and his brother Gerrit, of Toronto.  Dad will be greatly missed as a beloved uncle, cousin, friend, and community member.

Dad was born in Magelang, Indonesia on November 16, 1940. After the war ended, Dad lived in Holland and emigrated to Canada at the age of 21. Dad then went to university and became a psychologist in private practice for many years. He loved his role as Consul of the Netherlands for almost 25 years. Dad was known for being gregarious, outgoing, generous, outspoken and his delicious Indonesian cooking. He loved being involved in the Dutch Community with Veterans, the Carillon, the Netherlands Liberation ceremonies and GoGreenGoDutchGoBike.

He was our much-loved husband, Dad and Opa. He will be so very missed.

Our heartfelt gratitude to Henley Place (Harris Wing) staff for their attentive and loving care of Dad for the past two years.

My sincere condolences to Richard TerVrugts Family. I have fond memories of Richard , having immigrated from Holland in 1965, I got to know him initially at the “Dutch School” , where my 3 children went on Saturday mornings at Central highschool and went to his office many times! Any questions I had about passports , etc, he always was very helpful and helped my youngest daughter get a Dutch passport, and that was no easy feat , since my husband is not Dutch. He was quirky , helpful , knowledgeable and I ( we ) thank him for everything he did for us and for London!! May he rest in peace..he will not be forgotten and will be missed! Best wishes to you all! Sincerely, Dini Dobler London On.

Julie and family, I am so saddened to hear of your dad’s passing. I have followed the many Facebook posts over the last few years of your visits and times together. I read the tribute and your dad had an amazing life, born in Indonesia then on to Canada. So many adventures and so many accomplishments. This will leave behind many wonderful memories and such pride in a life well lived. I will continuing to be thinking of you as you grieve his loss.
