Richard “Rick” Alexander Horner
February 28, 2026
Peacefully with family by his side at St. Marys Memorial Hospital on Saturday, February 28, 2026, Richard “Rick” Alexander Horner passed away in his 81st year after a 2-year battle with Leukemia. He will be dearly missed by his wife Estelle of 51 years. Loving father of Jason Horner (Jill), Nicole Sawruk (Dan) and Ryan Horner. Grandpa Rick to Jacob, Taylor, Paige and Ella. Survived by his sister Nancy Miles (Keith) and brother-in-law Bert Vens. Rick will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Predeceased by his parents Victor and Enid Horner and sister Kathy Vens.
Rick enjoyed many sports growing up, but baseball was his favourite. He was an avid birdwatcher and spent many happy hours outdoors; hiking, cutting grass and doing barn chores. Family was very important to Rick and he loved time spent together; particularly at the annual corn roast. He also enjoyed model railroading and was a member of the Thames Valley Railroad Club (T.V.C.) in Thorndale. The family would like to thank Dr. Philip and the staff at the Verspeeten Family Cancer Centre, Ontario Health at Home and the V.O.N. for all of the wonderful care. Cremation has taken place and a private service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations to the Verspeeten Family Cancer Centre in Rick’s memory would be greatly appreciated by the family.

Dear Estelle, Jason, Nicky, Ryan and Nancy, please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss. I have so many fond memories of hanging out with my older cousin, whether it was playing crokinole with him as a kid, or playing baseball with him as adult at family picnics at his farm. I am so thankful that Rick and Estelle continued on the tradition of the summer family picnic. The family picnic had been a tradition started long ago to celebrate grandpa Hunter's birthday and having it continue at the Horner farmer was so precious and so full of good memories. I know my mom and dad loved this event as did my family when we were able to make down from Ottawa. I always respected my cousin's deep love of family and his kind, quiet and thoughtful approach to life. He reminded me so much of both his father Vic and mother Enid who were also very dear to me. I also loved the way my dad and Rick bonded over their love of baseball. Please take comfort in knowing that Rick was loved and respected by all who knew him.
To the Horner Family ! Our thoughts go out to you in this time of sorrow, Rick was a very kind man and i looked forward to the nice chats we had when I came by to look after the servicing of his lawn and garden equipment . Sincerely ! Mike Hough
