Robert Cecil Monk

August 6, 2022

Robert Cecil Monk passed away unexpectedly on August 6, 2022, at age 56 in Grand Rapids, MI with his loving wife Laura by his side. Rob was selected to play for Team Canada Slo-Pitch Seniors Border Battle in Grand Rapids. He had a perfect day playing the sport he loved. He will be greatly missed by his Slo-Pitch family.

Rob was born in Alliston, Ontario, July 25th, 1966 to parents Bobby and Jo-Anne (nee McCarthy) Wong. At two years of age, he was adopted by his forever father, Vern Monk when Vern and Jo-Anne married.

Although Rob moved many times in his childhood, he found his permanent home when he moved with Laura to Dorchester 31 years ago.

Beloved husband of Laura Spragg for 26 wonderful years. Cherished father of Samantha, William (Liam), and Levi. Rob’s pride and joy were his children; he revelled in their accomplishments. Adored Grampy to Sydney White, Blake and Elena Mitchell. Well loved son-in-law of Frances and the late Wayne Spragg. Loved brother-in-law to Debbie Spragg and husband Martin Goncalves. Son of the late Jo-Anne and Vern Monk and brother to Darlene Monk. Chosen brother-in-law to Jody (Lorrie) Slade. Idolized by nieces and nephews Chris Monk (Megan), Adam Slade, McKenzie Monk, TaraLee Slade (Cody), Torilyn Slade (Nick), Melvin Matschke (Maryke), Eric Matschke (Michelle) and Elizabeth Haggart (nee Matschke)(Steve). Fun loving great uncle to Eric Ethan, Mia and Alex Matschke, Carson, Lauren and Allison Haggart, Cason and Everett Monk, Daxton and Sawyer Slade, and Aubrey Holden.

Rob’s sense of adventure and fun coloured every aspect of his life. His smile, his boyish charm and good looks allowed him the freedom to say anything and get away with it. Rob had a flare for fashion and was always accessorized whether around town or on the field; he always wanted to look his best.

No matter what sport you were playing Rob was in. He was the ultimate teammate, a great sport, and talented player. Rob loved to share his knowledge of games and coached many local children’s hockey and baseball teams. He was well known for forcing his friends to learn his favorite board game, Catan.

Rob was Laura’s devoted, faithful, adventurous, fun loving partner for 32 years. He was her soul mate, best friend and partner in crime.

Rob’s last words to Laura were, “I love you so much. I’ve had the perfect life.”

A Celebration of Rob’s Life will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 27th, 2022 at Slo Pitch City, 2156 Slo Pitch Rd, Dorchester, ON.  Please gather at Diamond 1 for 1:00 p.m.

If desired, memorial donations to Stevenson Children’s Camp, www.stevensoncamp.ca or Dorchester Food Bank, 122 Queen Street, Dorchester, ON  N0L 1G2 would be gratefully acknowledged by the family.

Rob and I never had the chance to speak, but I am thankful for fate bringing him into my life. I have felt his positive light since the moment we connected. Thank you for the opportunity to meet Laura, learn about you and your beautiful family, and influencing change in my life. I will keep the memory of him with me always. <3 To Laura, Samantha, Liam, and Levi: You are a reflection of this wonderful man. Losing a loved one is never easy. Rob was clearly a fantastic person who influenced happiness in everyone. His energy will continue to influence those he knew for the rest of their lives, including myself and my daughter.

~ Meagan

Laura, I am so saddened to hear of Rob’s sudden passing. I have such fond memories of Rob coming into the store (Dorchester Pet and Country) and changing the dynamics of the day. If it wasn’t Rob striking up a friendly conversation with friends, or complete strangers, he would be giving me all the reasons we should be thankful. It was so endearing to see him call you from the store to ask you what you wanted him to bring home. It was evident the love he had for you. The world was a better place with Rob in it that is for sure. May he rest in peace and may you hold the memories close.

~ Heather Clark

So sad to hear the passing of Rob. Even though we only ran in to each other occasionally at hockey when our boys played each other we always had a good laugh reminiscing. RIP

~ Ron &Lori Innes

To Frances Spragg and Family: You are remembered at this sad time. Although we have not crossed paths for several years you are not forgotten. Please offer our sympathies to Laura and her family. To lose a loved one is always such a difficult experience in life. Keep your memories close. Shelley

~ Paul Vokey

Rob was such a nice man, and is now gone too soon. A real shock. I am sorry and send my love especially to Laura, Samantha, Liam, Levi, Darlene and Vern. How can we explain his death? We can't, but if it makes us live each day more intentionally, then Rob would be happy for us as we play on. God bless his soul, family and friends.

~ David E. Tonner

My deepest condolences to all who will mourn Rob. He was such a nice guy. He was so happy the last time I saw him. He stated "My life is good!" Even though we mourn his loss, he lived a great life. May his legacy be happiness and kindness. You will be missed my friend!

~ Darlene Snyders (nee Handley)

To Laura, Sam and all the Family: Although we did not see you often, we knew Rob was special. Dennis was his coach and teacher while at Beal. I met Rob at JK on Halloween when he came to see Sam dressed as a pirate. I remember the raison bread he would leave when Sam had a sleepover with Brooke. The meetings on the soccer field when he came to see Sam. Most of all was the unwavering support he had for his family. Thoughts are with you at this time. Dennis and Sine

~ Dennis Pettit and Sine Pettit

Sending sincere condolences
